Thank you for joining the "All about the webmaster" tour, now departing every
hour on the hour. Please keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle
at all times.
People like to ask me "Where are you from?" The
truth is I never really felt at home anywhere I've lived. I was born
in Chicago, but my family moved before I knew what snow was. I spent
a few years of my childhood in Memphis, and while I know I liked it, my enjoyment
didn't extend beyond friends, family and the ice skating rink--or roller
skating, depending on who you ask. Who else remembers roller skating
to "Walk Like an Egyptian" when it first came out?
Now I live in New Jersey, which is
basically one big asylum for all the nutcases no other state could handle.
I can't say the people here are good or bad necessarily, just "interesting".
I graduated Drew University
in 2003 with a double BA in theatre arts and classics. It's a small
suburban university in a gorgeous forest, which may not be for everyone,
but if you're looking at potential colleges and it sounds like something
you'd like I highly recommend checking it out. The theatre department
just opened a brand new building with a black box (which is actually midnight
blue--don't ask) and the small but quirky classics department is always ready
to accept new majors.
In the meantime, I'm trying to make my
dream of becoming a doctor come true, but life has annoyingly interrupted that
dream (see my blog for details.) It
may be a bit too early to consider this, but at the moment
as far as specialties go I'm eyeing anesthesiology: brief
but meaningful contact with patients, decent hours, and more independence
than other specialties. Of course, that also means I would have to
deal with all the jokes about being paid to put people to sleep...
My birthday is June 25th, making me a Crab among Crabs. That would
probably explain why the moon holds special meaning for me, and why even
my humor has a slightly dark tint. According to the zodiac, I'm compassionate,
spiritual, caring and quick to defend what I believe in, as well as being
oversensitive and moody with a habit of taking things personally. Every
word is true, for better or worse.
My interests are somewhat varied, and I tend to surprise even friends who
have known me for years. Attending a lecture on the development of
the cuneiform stylus is just as tempting a prospect to me as seeing a movie,
and a day at a science or history museum is as fun as a day on the Boardwalk.
Playwriting, archaeology, crochet, classical/80s music, the paranormal
and role-playing games all hold a special place in my life, as well as learning
to do new things. At the moment, on my "to-do list" is learning
to play the violin, speak Japanese, and study CRV (controlled remote viewing)
more in depth.
Television isn't a foreign notion to
me, although I don't watch the usual things that pass for "shows" these days.
Science fiction is prominent in my daily watching; lately that includes
Stargate SG-1/Atlantis, The Dead Zone and reality TV-based Ghost Hunters.
I also like to kick back and watch the antics of the Trading Spaces/Family
and While You Were Out crews on TLC. I liked Resident Life too (for
obvious reasons) but that was only on schedule for a season. On the
anime side of things, I like the series that are based on intrigue, doing
away with gratuitously gory scenes. Wolf's Rain and Witch Hunter Robin
come to mind immediately, with .hack//sign closely following. To a
lesser degree I enjoy the action-based Inuyasha and Yu Yu Hakusho, more for
the dry humor sprinkled throughout. These days, Adult Swim (from Cartoon
Network) airs Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex,
which--although interesting--fails to capture my attention to the degree
Wolf's Rain and Witch Hunter Robin did.
That, presently, is my life in one
strange little nutshell. Thank you for attending the tour; please wait
until your vehicle has come to a complete stop before exiting. Children,
please take small parents by the hand as you exit the vehicle.
